A bit of history:
Hangzhou or city of Heaven was Marco Polo’s favorite city. He wrote “it is without a doubt the finest and most splendid city in the world.” Centuries later, Hangzhou’s West Lake and its surroundings have been protected. In the 13th Century, Hangzhou was a major market place offering fresh food such as vegetables, Fruits, meat & fish. You could also find gems, pearls and spices & perfumes. At the period spices & perfumes were refined goods sought after in Europe.
In 2011 the lake was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From Shanghai to Hangzhou by Train in only 40 minutes:
One of the easiest, fastest and cheapest way to get to Hangzhou is to take the train from Hongqiao Railway Station (subway line 2 or 10) to Hangzhou Station ( you can show those caracters : 杭州站).
There is another railway station in Hangzhou but a long way of the West lake. (Avoid the west station:杭州东站).
Once you at Hangzhou station take the subway directly at the station, this is the red line. You stop at the second stop after the Hangzhou Station. The Lake will be only few minutes walk from the subway exist.
What to do in Hangzhou?
If you have only a day, The West lake is the place to go. Whatever the weather is a beautiful spot, better to go during the week to avoid the crowd. Thus you can enjoy walking around. its circumference is 15 km.

Tips:
- Buy your return ticket in the morning to make sure you get space. if not you will find private driver outside of the station, they fill in private car. price is about RBM 250-300 per person.
